What is the NASDAQ?

The NASDAQ holds the distinction of being the first electronic market in stock market history.

The NASDAQ Stock Market, Inc. was formed at the request of the Securities Exchange Commission to help improve regulation of OTC stocks (over the counter stocks).

Most OTC companies are small, start-ups and NASDAQ listings are replete with innovative small caps to the present day. Technology companies, in particular, find the NASDAQ Exchange attractive. Perhaps this is because it is the most technologically savvy and efficient online stock exchange in the world.

As an electronic market, it has no trading floor. Even so, the NASDAQ Stock Exchange has a physical location in Times Square.

The MarketSite Tower located at 43rd and Broadway, displays a brightly lit Jumbotron which wraps around the cylindrical building and provides real time stock market information to passers by.

This 7 story, always illuminated tower houses a digital broadcast studio used by a number of financial news networks to reach millions of viewers.

NASDAQ MarketSite also hosts press releases, product launches, corporate meetings and special events.

What is NASDAQ OMX Group?

In February of 2008 the NASDAQ exchange bought OMX, a Swedish/Finish financial company with 2 divisions: OMX Exchanges and OMX Technology.

OMX Exchanges operates 8 stock exchanges in the Baltic and Nordic countries while the technology division develops financial transaction systems used by stock exchanges.

The combined companies, called the NASDAQ OMX Group, own and operate the NASDAQ Stock Exchange.

NASDAQ Quotes

NASDAQ stock quotes are offered at 3 levels:

  • Level 1 quotes display the highest inside bid and lowest inside ask.

  • Level 2 quotes display public market maker quotes and recent executions.

  • Level 3 is used by market makers to enter their quotes and for order execution.
  • NASDAQ Trading Hours
