Trading Intraday

Intraday Stock Trading

There seems to be some confusion about what trading intraday is. Intraday trading simply refers to trades made during normal stock market trading hours as opposed to after hours or pre market trading.

Intraday means "in the day" just like intravenous means "in the vein".

What I have stated so far applies to all types of trading. Forex, options--anything that trades off an exchange. I'm a stock trader so the rest of what I have to say will apply to intraday stock trading.

Intraday Day Trading

All day stock trading is intraday stock trading.

The simplest day trading definition I can give you is this: Stock trading strategies in which trades open and close within the same session.

Maybe this is why so many people think day trading and intraday trading are interchangeable terms. They aren't but the distinction is fine and difficult to see at first glance.

The whole point of day trading is to avoid overnight risk. This is done by trading intraday--getting into and back out of all positions between the opening and closing bells of a single trading session.

Day traders do not usually participate in the extended hours trading of stock (after hours and pre market trading) because there is usually not enough liquidity in the after hours market to make it feasible.

Day traders do rely more on intraday trading data (breaking news and minute charts, etc.)than on historical data. They may also use intraday trading alerts.

Intraday Trading Systems

Intraday trading strategies can be day trades but they do not have to be.

Any stock market trading system which dictates that you place your buy and sell orders during regular stock market trading hours is an intraday trading system.

The securities do not have to bought and sold during the same session.

For example, intraday swing trading is a form of intraday momentum trading. It sounds silly to say it this way because most all swing and momentum trading is done by placing intraday trades.

A swing trader enters a position during one session (normally intraday), waits for the price to rise due to the momentum in the stock at that time, and exits the position at a gain a few days later (during a different session). Both the buy and sell are intraday trades, they're just made on different days.

I hope my explanation of trading intraday is clearer than mud to you.
