Technical Analysis vs Fundamental Analysis

Understanding the Stock Market

Technical analysis vs fundamental analysis. Stock market basics for beginners. When to use technical market analysis. When the fundamental analysis of stocks would yield more useful results.

Fundamental and technical analysis are two completely different approaches to stock market online investing.

Technical stock analysis is performed using share price history and trading indicators. Its purpose is to predict short term share price movement and stock market trends.

The fundamental analysis of stocks takes a publicly traded company's earnings, debt, assets, and positioning in the market vs its competitors into account whilst attempting to determine the fair market value of its stock shares.

Fundamental stock analysis is predicated upon the belief that though stock market investors sometimes "misprice" a stock, they will eventually realize its "true value".

Investors use fundamental analysis to find undervalued stocks which they can purchase at a discount and hold until the market prices them correctly.

Investing Short Term

This is where stock technical analysis is most useful. Short term stock trading strategies do not leave the trader time for the lengthy process of thoroughly analyzing company fundamentals.

Day, swing and position traders need to be able to make trading decisions quickly. Although they may look at certain company fundamentals before putting a stock on their watch list, they rely on technical analysis tools day to day.

Technical analysis charts give stock market traders the ability to see if a stock meets their trading criteria almost instantly.

Also, when you are trying to make money swing trading stock, stock market trends are more predictive of share price movement than company fundamentals.

Long Term Investing

If you are a buy and hold investor, mastering fundamental analysis will improve your stock investing results.

It is well known that the long term stock market trend is up (over decades). If you can find good companies, buy them at a discount and hold them for many years, you will almost certainly make money investing in stock.

The way you find these companies is by the use of fundamental analysis techniques.

Technical Analysis vs Fundamental Analysis
The Final Verdict

Though you have purists in both camps, I suspect that most investors use fundamental and technical analysis.

As a short term trader, I rely most heavily on stock and market technical analysis but I also use fundamental security analysis to make sure that the companies I trade are financially sound before I invest in them.

As far as winning in the stock market is concerned, I will use anything that will help me make money or keep me from losing money. I suggest that you do the same.
