Stock Market Investing Basics
Basic Stock Market Investing What's Important and What's Not
Stock market investing basics. Learn the basics of the stock market. Stock market basics for beginners. What's important to basic stock market investing and what's not.
It's not what you think!
Basics of the Stock Market
Most new stock market investors think that the most important aspect of understanding basic stock market strategy is knowing WHAT stock to trade. They scour the internet searching for the next hot stock pick. Thinking that if they could just find the right company to invest in they could fund their retirement in a single trade. The sole question on their lips is, "What should I buy?"
They are asking the wrong question.
When it comes to making money in the stock market, the most important question is not, "What should I buy?" but "When should I buy it?"
Stock Market Timing Basics
WHEN you trade is almost always much more important than WHAT you trade.
But for all of my harping on and on about basic stock market investing, this is the one question no one ever asks.
New traders are so focused on learning what to do that the idea that there might be a good time or a bad time to do it never enters their thinking.
I can assure you, over the course of 5 years, when you initiate a trade will have a greater effect on how much money you make or lose than what stock you traded.
So when should you open new positions?
Since you are just learning the
stock market basics,
I will assume you are taking long positions. Put on new positions when:
The market as a whole is trending up.
The stock you intend to invest in is in an
uptrend.
The market sector that your stock is in is performing well.
Here's another piece of basic stock market information: If the company you are trading has a business cycle, be mindful of where you are within that cycle before opening or closing positions.
You can tell if a stock trades cyclically by looking at a 5 year chart. Even if the stock is in a long-term uptrend, you may notice that share prices tend to rise at a certain time of year and fall at another time.
You will want to invest in these types of companies when their share prices are near the trough and sell them near the peak.
