Starting A Medical Billing Business At Home

Thinking about starting a medical billing business at home?

Here's a checklist of what you need before you begin your marketing campaign:

  • Medical Billing Coding Online Training

  • Medical billing and coding certification

  • The best medical billing software you can afford. (Docs are being warned away from Medisoft and Lytec so you may want to choose something else.)

  • At least $1,000,000 in errors and omissions insurance. In case you make a mistake that costs one of your physicians a large sum.

  • A fax line.

  • Professional looking business cards and flyers that help sell your service by highlighting the benefits hiring you will bring the client.

  • Billing contracts.

  • Two or more years of billing experience. Very few billers are good enough salespeople to obtain clients having no prior experience.

    Got everything?

    Good!

Now here's what you need to do:

Put on a nice suit. Remember, these people don't know how professional you are; you've got to show them. You want everything about you and your business to inspire confidence.

Take those flyers and business cards and don't mail them to every doctor's office within easy driving distance. They won't make it past the front desk. I want you to take them to the 350 offices nearest your home.

Starting a medical billing business will take time so pace yourself. I know it sounds like a lot, but this is how many you may have to go to in order to secure your first two or three clients. You didn't think that starting a medical billing business at home would be easy did you?

Medical billing is a highly competitive business.

Every physician you are attempting to sell your service to already has someone doing his billing!

(It could well be the lady at the front desk.) You are trying to take something from that person. This is why it is so hard to get past the front desk and speak with the doctor or office manager.

Unless you are a member of the doctor's country club or your children are in the same class, it is unlikely that you will be able to make an end run around the front desk. You'll need to find a way to win her over.

Always be polite and patient. Don't become annoyed no matter how rude she may be to you. Remember, you want something from her.

It may take several visits and even a small gift, but you will eventually win a few of these ladies over (or maybe just wear them down).

You'll get a few minutes of the office manager's or doctor's precious time.

    Now, close the sale!

This is not the time to be shy. Most docs will have had problems with incompetent medical billers in the past. It will take a hard sell to overcome their fear.

    Preparedness is key.

If you have experience in his specialty. If you go in understanding his billing problems. If you can clearly communicate how you intend to solve those problems.

You will walk out with a signed contract.

Congratulations on starting a medical billing business at home!
