Retirement Jobs

Should You Start A Business During Retirement?

A Quiz to Help You Decide

People take on retirement jobs for many different reasons. Some need the money. Some have always wanted to work for themselves but couldn't take the risk of starting a business when they were younger because they had too many other people depending on them. Some retirees just want to keep busy. Others need a new challenge.
But starting a home based business isn't the right choice for every retiree.

Here's a short quiz to help you decide if a business is the right retirement job for you.

Do you need the money?

  1. No, I'm set.

  2. Yes, desperately.

  3. I could use a little extra money, but it's not critical.

What is your highest goal now that you have exited the work force?

  1. Self actualization. It's my time now. I've been putting other people first for years. Now, I'm going to focus on doing what I want to do.

  2. Spending time with my grandchildren. Now that I'm not working anymore, I plan to be totally available to them.

  3. I would like to become more involved in my community. I'd like to be of service and help people in need.

Which of the following best describes you?

  1. I can't sit still for too long. When my body isn't moving, my mind is working over time to take up the slack. I have a lot of ideas and I like to try new things.

  2. I like to keep busy physically, but strategic planning really isn't my thing. Outside of family dinners and day trips for the kids, I'm not much of a planner.

  3. I like to take off every once in a while and go on a fishing trip. The time away from everything rejuvenates me.

You're running a business. Your client needs you to finish a project by tomorrow morning. Your favorite granddaughter's recital is tonight. What do you do?

  1. Go to the recital but skip the dinner afterward. I'd spend the rest of the evening working and stay up all night, if I had to, to make that deadline.

  2. Go to the recital and ask the client for an extension.

  3. I would talk to the client before making my final decision. If they could possibly give me an extra day to complete the assignment, I would go to the recital and have dinner with my family afterward.

If most of your answers were ones, you are probably ambitious and driven enough to start your own business. Work is still a high enough priority for you to make a success of anything you choose to do. You know how to balance the needs of the business against your personal needs.

If you chose mostly twos, a business might not be the perfect retirement job for you. Any business requires an up front investment of your money and your time. You have to be prepared to go without an income for at least six months.

If you need a steady income right away, a part-time job would be a much better fit for you at this time in your life. If you really want to start a business, you can always save and start one later when you're better prepared financially.

If number three was your most frequent choice, you are a very kind and considerate person with a big independent streak. These qualities can work for you or against you in business depending on how you handle them.

The right kind of home based business could be the ideal retirement job for someone like you. Many businesses are demanding and will not accommodate your need to disappear for days at a time. Freelance work might be better adapted to your lifestyle. You could take assignments when you want to work or need the money and turn them down when you want to travel or do volunteer work instead. Your clients would probably like you well enough to allow you a certain amount of latitude.

Whatever you decide to do, remember that the most important thing about retirement jobs is that they be enjoyable. After working all those years, you've earned the right to like what you do.
