    NYSE Opening and Closing Bell

There are 4 bells located in different parts of the NYSE stock market building. They all ring at once when a single button is pressed.

They are rung to mark the beginning and end of each trading session.

The tradition was started when the NY Stock Exchange moved into its present location at 18 Broad Street in Manhattan back in 1903.

Originally a gavel was used and later a gong.

It is a modern tradition for a celebrity or company CEO to ring the NYSE closing bell. This televised event is applauded by everyone on the trading floor.

The NY stock exchange only began inviting people outside the company to ring the closing bell in 1995. Before that, an NYSE floor manager rang it.
