Non Emergency Ambulance Services
The Low Down On The Start Up Costs
Non emergency ambulance services are surprisingly inexpensive to start. Especially for a business with the potential for such amazing growth and profit!
The population of the U.S. is growing older and (unfortunately) sicker with each passing year. That's not going to change in the near future. People in wheelchairs and (less often) on stretchers have to get to their doctor's appointments. They have to get from the hospital to the nursing home. They have to get home from the hospital. Not all of these special needs passengers can ride in a taxi. Many of them are not sick enough to require an ambulance. And ambulance rides are prohibitively expensive. In the weeks following my mother's stroke, she had to be transported by ambulance several times at a cost of more than $650 for each trip! Medicare paid for 80%. But we were left with the $120+ balance. Mom was not on Medicaid so we had to pay out-of-pocket whenever she was transported by ambulette. We were happy to pay the $75 fee per ride. (Medicare did not cover non medical transportation at that time--2003. This may have changed.) This creates a GAP in the transportation marketplace. A gap you can fill by
starting a non emergency medical transportation service.
You'll be providing a vital community service and making spectacular money at the same time. If you start small with just one van which you drive yourself, you can
start an ambulettes business
with less than $10,000. You don't need a new vehicle. Shop around for a good deal and buy a used one for $6,000 - $7,000. And who says you have to pay cash? When the economy tanked back in 2008, my husband knew he was going to end up unemployed. Of course this is when our old Chrysler decided to start acting ugly. We decided to buy another car while he was still working and could qualify for a loan. We didn't want to risk the Chrysler quitting on us while he was out of work and forcing us to part with our precious cash reserves. We decided we would only buy if we could find something with a payment under $150 per month. We ended up buying a great Sable for just over 6k. We got a loan through our credit union at 6% interest with no money down. The payment is $145. And we still had our cash! It makes even more sense to borrow to buy a business vehicle as the interest on the loan will be tax deductible. The van would earn enough to cover the payment on it in just two rides. The only other things you need to start are: Business cards. You'll be handing these out to everybody to spread the word about your new ambulettes service.Tee shirts with your company logo on them so you look professional.A cell phone so people can call you when they need a ride. Keep an appointment book in the van with you and pull over before you pick up. Later, when the business is profitable, you can hire an answering service if you like.Whatever insurance your state requires non emergency ambulance services to carry so that your passengers are adequately protected in case of accident.I would also recommend that you spend a couple hundred dollars to consult with an attorney about how to set up the business so that you are not personally liable in the unfortunate event of an accident. You could get your non emergency ambulance service up and running for less than $2,000 if you already have a suitable van or can borrow the entire cost of one.
P.S. Two more tips before you go... Wait until you find out what features the DOT requires ambulettes to have in your state before you buy a van. Have your company logo and phone number painted prominently on the side of the van so that you're advertising for new business as you drive passengers around town.
