Make Money Making Crafts
3 Business Models for Selling Crafts
How to make money making crafts in 3 ways: starting a home based craft business, selling craft designs to the craft magazines and assembly at home where you make money assembling crafts for a company.

Many people think that
making money with crafts
is something that they would enjoy doing. As someone who has both run a home based craft business and assembled crafts at home for other businesses, I can tell you what making money with crafts is really like. This can be very enjoyable work which can provide a steady income. It can also take over your life. If you are passionate about your craft and spend every free moment at it anyway, you may not mind this. This is what will most likely happen if you start a home craft business. A lot of people seem to think that running a home based craft business is like being a child again. You spend all day playing with your favorite toys. The reality of running a successful craft business is somewhat different. It entails a great deal of hard work. I do not mean to suggest that it isn't fun. It is always fun to do what you love and to be surrounded by the things you most enjoy: your home, your family, your craft supplies. What I am trying to tell you is that crafts selling is a very competitive business. It will sometimes seem to you that every third person you meet is selling homemade crafts. Producing crafts that sell consistently takes hours per day. Starting a craft business is not the way to earn money making crafts at home if you only want to work a few hours a week. I gave up my doll house miniatures business for just this reason. I still wanted to earn money from craft work so I began farming myself out to other women with craft businesses. I liked this much better than running my own. It was easier and less time consuming. Everyone I have ever known who runs a home craft business works 12-14 hours a day at it. This does not seem to bother them a bit. They love their hand made craft business, make a comfortable living from it and the hours just seem to breeze by. I did not feel this way. I loved making money at crafts but I wanted to have time for other things as well.
Home assembly
was a much better way for me to earn money from craft work.
Assembling Crafts to Make Money
There are 2 ways to do this: - Work with local companies and pick up and deliver the finished crafts.
- Buy craft kits online from craft companies anywhere in the country, assemble the kits and mail them back to the company.
I worked with local companies. Getting local work is trickier but you have the pleasure of getting to know the people you are working with/for and there is no waiting for things to go back and forth through the mail. You drop the finished crafts off. They inspect them on the spot and tell you if your work has met their production standards. If it has, they pay you. If not, you do it over and get paid for it when it's right. I worked for the same 2 companies for 6 years until I moved out of the area. They valued my help and always paid me right away. It was a wonderful arrangement for all of us. I controlled my work flow by only working for 2 craft companies. Diane and Barbara provided me with enough work to fill all the time I wished to devote to making money with crafts.

This is the 3rd craft business model. I have done this as well and it is fun but challenging. If you enjoy making crafts, you are no doubt familiar with the various craft magazines. The editors of these publications are charged with the task of filling each issue with new and inventive craft projects. Where do you think they get these craft projects? They get them from people like you and me. Creative people who design their own craft items. I don't have space here to go into detail about how to do this. I'll write a more in-depth article about it later. For now, I'll just give you the basics. Get hold of the submission guidelines of the magazine you want to sell craft projects to.Make up a sample or 2. The craft must be your own original design. You can't sell the instructions to a craft project you made from a pattern or a set of instructions written by someone else because of copyright law.Write clear, concise instructions for making the project.Take clear photos of the samples.Submit the pictures and instructions to the craft magazine.Wait for a response. The editor will let you know one way or the other.
