Medical Coding Salaries
Medical Billing Salaries

In order to avoid repetition, when referring to both medical coding salaries and billing salaries, I'll use the term medical billing coding salaries, O.K.?

Medical billing coding salaries are in line with the cost of billing and coding classes and the time required to complete the training.

For example: an RN makes about $60,000 per year after 2-4 years of training. A medical billing clerk makes roughly half that but can train in as little as a month.

Medical Billing Salaries

Medical billing salaries vary by location. A billing clerk working in a large city can expect to make more than one working at a rural hospital.

It would be reasonable to expect to be paid $23,000 - $29,000 right after completing medical billing instruction.

With certification and experience your salary could rise to $32,000.

Billing managers can make $37,000 per year.

Medical Coding Salaries

Medical coding salaries also vary by location with coders in urban areas earning more than their rural counterparts.

Certification makes a huge difference here. AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders) certified coders average $38,000 per year. Without certification the average annual salary of a medical coder is $30,000.

If you can secure a consulting position you can expect to earn much more. Upwards of $50,000.

The highest salaries are enjoyed by those who start a medical billing business at home These businesses often make $100,000 per year or more!

Job Outlook

Because billing and coding are so intimately connected to physician pay, these are not jobs that can be easily outsourced overseas.

This combines with an aging population to create a strong job and salary outlook in both these specialties.

The future for medical billers and coders has never looked brighter!
