These sites have already earned a great deal of respect with Google. This means that articles posted on them tend to rank well in the SERPS immediately.

A new website has an uphill battle to fight to earn this respect from the search engines. It takes months to achieve it. During this process, you would be working for nothing.

The other advantage the revenue sharing sites have over your own website is that you don't have to build anything before you can start posting articles and you don't have to pay for anything. There are people who make $500-$700 per month from these sites, but they have written hundreds of articles. Even though this doesn't cost money; it's a big investment. Writing hundreds of articles is a lot of work. There's a major time investment here.

Think about whether you're willing to invest all that time and effort into a website you don't own.
