The first thing you have to do is decide what kind of home business you want to start. I'll assume you have something in mind.
Next, try to figure out how much money you can expect to make.
If you plan to produce a product, do some research to find out how much you'll be able to sell it for. What are similar products selling for?
It's easy enough to find out what other sellers are asking for a product. It's much more difficult to find out what they are getting. But this is the piece of information you really need.
Other questions you need to answer are: Is there a enough of a market for your product to allow you to make a living selling it? And, Can you effectively reach that market? If so, how? What marketing strategy will you employ to make sales?
The same questions apply if you are planning to start a service business.
If, after researching it, you feel there is a strong market for your product/service; you will need to figure out if you can produce/perform it profitably.
Your research has told you how much you can get for your product. Now you need to know how much it will cost you to make. This is harder to figure than you might think.
You not only have to consider your materials cost, but your overhead. All your marketing costs, your insurance costs, gas, etc... Last add in your time.
How long does it take you to make one of these products? How much do you need to make an hour?
If it were easy to come up with a product that will pay all its production costs while selling for a price most people are willing to pay everyone would start a home based business.
Of course, not everyone who starts a home business does all of this research and planning. They commonly forget to factor in all of their overhead cost. Some craftspeople do not add in all of the time they spend on their handicrafts.
What such people can end up with is a business that isn't very profitable. It 's more of a cash flow system. This is o.k. if what you want is a hobby business. But if you need to earn a living, this is not the best approach.
Keep researching product and/or service ideas until you find one that is financially sound.
It may take you several months to find the right one, but this is an excellent investment. It will prevent you from pouring time and money into a business that will never really pay.
