How to Start a Home Business Selling Jar Mixes

by Brianna
(Scotsdale, AZ)

While looking for a home based business to start, I came across a company called Heavenly Sweets. They are looking for sales reps to sell their homemade jar mixes.

They sell cookie, cake, cocoa mixes and lots of other yummy looking stuff. All the mixes are packaged in the most darling canning jars with cloth covered lids.

They say you can resell their mixes for as much as you want. The starter package is only $35.

Do you think this is a good business to go into.

Faith's Answer

I made a brief visit to the Heavenly Sweets website. I agree with you about their packaging. It is cute and does put you in the mood to bake up a batch of something yummy.

Two things concern me. According to their website, the company does not take responsibility for jars that break during shipping. How comfortable are your potential customers going to feel ordering from them? After all, they chose to put their products in glass jars.

My second, and more important, concern is the pricing. The prices they quote as being wholesale seem high to me.

You need to be able to sell a product for at least twice what it costs you in order to have a profitable business. Could you consistently do that with these products?

I have my doubts. How many people do you think will be willing to pay $10 or more for a jar of brownie mix?

Also, unless I am mistaken, it looks like they are selling to the public on their website. It looks like your customers would probably be able to buy the products more economically from them than they would from you.

I think you should look for a company with more favorable pricing.
