How Do You Work As A Medical Transcriptionist From Your Home?

My sister has enrolled in a medical transcription course. She has paid a lot of money to do this and I am worried that she is being misled.
She says that once she graduates she will be able to work doing medical transcription from her house.
I have my doubts about this. Can she really do medical transcription from home? How exactly does this work?
Faith's Answer
You can relax. Your sister has not been misled.
Most medical transcriptionists (MTs) work out of their homes.
Doctors send audio files of patient records to a transcription company. The transcription company uses MTs to transcribe these recordings. Since this is all done with computers, the MT can be anyplace. As long as she/he has a reliable internet connection and a secure computer, she can work.
Mts are paid so much for every line they transcribe. This is how the company knows what to pay them. Medical Transcription Salaries will provide more detail on how MTs are paid.
Using remote workers saves the transcription company money. They can employ a very large staff and service many contracts while operating out of a small office.
This arrangement also allows the MT to work in the comfort of her own home. Everybody wins!
