Freedlance Web Writing
The most common form of freelance writing is web content writing. These articles cover just about every topic imaginable, so you can find projects that match your interests. For single articles, the turn-around time is usually short; 1-2 days for an article (or a short series of them) is common.
Freelance Magazine Writing
Magazines that hire freelance writers
are an additional source of writing projects. The best news here is that a pro-active approach may lead to work not advertised anywhere. If you enjoy reading a particular magazine, write something you find interesting and that fits the magazine's content; submit a query letter and you may be on your way to a sale. If not, market that article to other sources until someone buys it. Magazine articles tend to be longer – anywhere from 500 – 1,000 words is common. These projects will generally have a longer deadline, giving you more time to complete them.
Press Releases Many small companies don't have a P.R. firm and bid out their press releases to freelance home writers. These specialized projects are short (usually no more than a page) and require some familiarity with the form; they are not, however, difficult to learn and can prove very lucrative. I suggest you write one or two for existing (or unreleased) products and keep them in your portfolio. The thing to remember about press releases is that they tend to be very time specific, so meeting the deadline is absolutely critical. Rewrites Rewriting is a different beast altogether; it generally has the shortest turn-around time because much of the work is already done. For a rewrite, you will either have to: a) fix the language as the original has good content but poor grammar and presentation, or b) make the article sound very different from the original so the same material can be used for a few different projects. A large vocabulary can help you with this second task quite a bit. Turn-around on these projects is usually very short; unless you are given a number of rewrites to do at once (or unless you need to rewrite the same article multiple times), expect to have no more than one or two business days to complete your project.
