Black Thursday 1929
Stock Market History

Black Thursday 1929 in stock market history. Great depression stock market crash of 1929. The day the worst crash in the history of the stock market began.

Thursday October 24, 1929 marked the beginning of the end of the 6 year raging bull market between 1923 and 1929. The Dow actually peaked at 381.17 on September 3, 1929 and proceeded to slide into a downtrend for the next few weeks.

On Black Thursday the bottom fell out.

A record (at that time) 12.9 million shares traded. (A new volume record would be set the following week on Black Tuesday.)

Typical trading volume for the NY stock market in those days was around 4 million shares.

The ticker tape could not keep up with the flow of orders and fell behind by as much as 90 minutes during the session. This may have increased the panic and accelerated the sell off.

The Dow had fallen 9% by the close. This kicked off the 1929 stock market crash.
