Black Monday Stock Market Crash

Stock Market History

Black Monday stock market crash 1987 facts. October 19, 1987 was the worst day in the history of the stock market since the Black Tuesday October 29, 1929 stock market crash.

On Black Monday 1987 the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 508 points (22%). The S&P dropped 20.4%.

Investors lost $500 billion in a single day.

It was the biggest 1 day point loss since the Black Tuesday stock market crash in 1929.

The Dow broke this record on another Black Monday on September 29, 2008 after the U.S. House of Representatives rejected a $700 billion bailout plan. The DJI dropped 778 points.

This represents the largest single session point drop in Dow history.

The 778 points shed by the DJI that day represented about 9% of its value so Black Monday 1987 still holds the record for the biggest percentage decline.

To help you put this in perspective:

  • The markets dropped 7.1% on Sept. 17, 2001
  • 3.3% on Feb. 27, 2007.
  • The great stock market crash produced a 12.8% loss on Black Monday October 28, 1929, followed by an 11.7% slide the following day (Black Tuesday) and one of 9.9% on November 6.

  • So, the 22.6% decline in 1987 was truly devastating.
