Beginner Stock Market Investing

5 Steps for Stock Market Beginners

Beginner stock market investing is a beginners guide to stock market trading. Manageable steps to success in the stock market for beginner investors. Stock market information for beginners.

To a stock market beginner, just getting started on the road to stock market wealth can seem a daunting task. There are so many things one needs to learn in order to make money in the stock market.

Where do you begin?

These 5 easy steps into the world of stock market investing for beginners will help you get into the game.

  1. Open an online trading/investment account. There are several reputable online discount stock brokers. I've written about a few of them in Penny Stock Brokers.

As a stock market beginner, you may not be planning to buy penny stocks buy much of the criteria for choosing a broker will be the same and it will not hurt you to chose a firm which will give you the best prices on penny stock trades as you may want to speculate in them at some point in the future.

  2. Fund your investment account. How much you need to put into it depends on what your investment goals are and the time frame in which you hope to achieve them.

Beginners in the stock market who are looking to create a healthy retirement income through building up a large portfolio of dividend paying stocks can start with as little as $2,000 as long as they can add money to the account regularly and have 30 years to reach their goal.

A stock market beginner who wishes to generate an immediate income sufficient to support herself utilizing short term trading strategies will need to start with a lot more money.

I am not advocating that any beginner to investing in the stock market attempt the latter. In fact, I think it is a very bad idea. It takes a solid grasp of the basics of stock market investing as well as a large amount of trading capital to achieve this.

  3. Choose companies for your watch list. Again, your stock market investment goals and time frame will play the largest role in determining what kind of companies you invest in.

For now, it is important that you understand this: whenever you purchase the stock of an individual company, you take on its credit risk. This means, it the company goes belly up while you are in possession of its stock, your shares will most likely become worthless.

This is the biggest risk you will face in beginner stock market investing and one you must learn to avoid.

This is largely done by examining the company financials which you can access online for free. See Calculate Cash Flow for further instruction in this stock market basic.

Until you have mastered this, you can circumvent credit risk by simply trading ETFs (exchange traded funds) instead.

You can make just as much money trading or investing in ETFs as you might trading individual companies and there are ETFs covering every stock market sector.

  4. Develop a winning trading strategy. This is not as difficult as you may think. Anyone who understands how the stock market works can do it. But first you need to understand what a winning investment strategy is.

Any trading strategy that generates a gain at least 50% of the time AND generates gains that are at least 3 times the size of the losses it generates is a profitable stock market strategy.

Read that again. It is the key to making consistent profits in the stock market.

  5. If you intend to trade (move in and out of stock positions routinely) rather than invest in companies long term, paper trade until you become comfortable with whatever trading strategy you are using.

Understand, however, that paper trading is not entirely akin to trading in real time with real money. A different psychology applies whenever you have to make decisions in real time and your precious dollars are at risk.
