Art Print How about a few hundred? Or maybe even a couple thousand? Do you like the idea of being reimbursed for dining at your favorite restaurants? How would you feel about mystery shopping companies paying to put gas in your car? If you have a good memory and are observant, becoming a secret shopper could be your rout to quick profits. You can get started in the mystery shopping business for free. In fact, you can become a secret shopper today. There is no official training course for people who want to become secret shoppers. There is no certification required. This is not to say that there is no training or certification that you can obtain. You just don't have to have it before you can begin applying for and going out on secret shopper jobs. The MSPA (Mystery Shopping Providers Association) offers 2 levels of mystery shopping certification: silver and gold. I am currently an MSPA silver certified shopper. The simple test took about half an hour and cost me $15. I feel it was well worth this small investment to be able to put my certificate number on mystery shopping job applications. I think it gives me a leg up on uncertified shoppers. But I was not certified when I first began signing up with mystery shop companies. I did get assignments then too so I know for a fact that you don't have to be certified in order to become a secret shopper. As far as training is concerned, secret shopper companies will provide you with any training they think you need for free. You only have to invest the time it takes to complete the tests. To be honest with you, I tend to avoid shops that require special training. There are plenty that don't. The only skills you need to become a secret shopper are:
Number 3 is the most important to mystery shopping company schedulers and will carry you a long way in this industry. A high percentage of secret shoppers are what mystery shopping company schedulers call "flakes". Shoppers who accept assignments and then just blow them off. Needless to say, this is not the way to build strong relationships with schedulers. And these relationships are valuable. You see, the best secret shopping jobs--by best I mean most lucrative and most fun--never make it to the job boards. The schedulers offer them to their favorite shoppers. How do you get to be one of a scheduler's favorite shoppers? Be reliable! If you accept a secret shopping job complete it properly and submit your report on time. If a household emergency prevents you from doing so, call or email the secret shopping service as far ahead of the shop as possible and inform them of the problem. They may allow you to reschedule or they may have to assign the shop to someone else. Either way, they will appreciate you contacting them before the deadline and will be willing to work with you again in the future.
